Why should I consider a gift to North Shore-LIJ?
Gifts are made for many different reasons. Often gifts are made:
- To express gratitude for the care you or a family member received.
- To memorialize a loved one or create a family legacy.
- To honor a doctor or nurse.
- To provide funding for research toward a cure for a disease.
- To ensure medical services will remain available.
What sort of assets can I use to make a gift?
Almost anything: cash, publicly traded securities, part of the balance in your retirement account, a life insurance policy. Other assets can be very valuable but are more complicated to administer and must be reviewed by us before we can accept them as gifts: real estate, closely held stock, and artwork/collectibles.
I am unable to make a current gift, but I would still like to support North Shore-LIJ. What can I do?
If you wish to support our mission, you can plan now for a future gift through a bequest under your will. We would be pleased to provide suggested language to you or your attorney to ensure you can create your legacy.
Can I direct how North Shore-LIJ will use my gift?
Yes. Some donors direct that their gifts be used to support a specific hospital or area of research. Please be sure to discuss this with us when you plan your gift. Consider, however, leaving part or all of your gift with no restrictions to enable us to meet needs that we cannot even anticipate at the present time.
Can I create an income stream for myself with my gift?
Yes! North Shore-LIJ offers several options that can pay you income. That income can increase cash flow now and/or during retirement, provide income for aging parents, or perhaps assist a loved one with special needs.
How will my gift be recognized?
If you make a planned gift, your name will be added to the permanent member roster of The Payson Wharton Legacy Society. You will also have the opportunity to name a facility or program or to create a permanent fund. (We will honor requests for anonymity.)
What hospitals are part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System?
The North Shore-LIJ Health System encompasses 14 hospitals, several world-renowned institutes (such as the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research), specialty centers for women’s health care, orthopedics, and sports medicine, four long-term-care facilities, four home-care agencies, and a hospice care network. The unique relationship among these facilities allows patients to take advantage of the specialized expertise of thousands of top doctors, nurses, and researchers.
Our system hospitals currently include: Forest Hills Hospital, Franklin Hospital, Glen Cove Hospital, Huntington Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, North Shore University Hospital, Plainview Hospital, Schneider Children’s Hospital, Southside Hospital, Staten Island University Hospital (North Division), Staten Island University Hospital (South Division), Syosset Hospital, and The Zucker Hillside Hospital.
Can I transfer my IRA (or a portion of it) to North Shore-LIJ and avoid income tax on the transfer?
Unfortunately legislation that allowed a donor to direct lifetime distributions to us without incurring income-tax liability expired at the end of 2009.
You may still make a withdrawal from your IRA or other type of retirement plan, pay income tax on the withdrawal, and donate the proceeds to us. These gifts can be made outright or can fund a life-income gift (gift annuity or charitable remainder trust) and will generate an income-tax charitable deduction.
